What Is a Liveable Diet?

By

Well, for one thing, it is NOT going to be a fad diet!

Think about fad diets. They generally have severe eating restrictions, in terms of what foods you can eat, when you can eat them, and how much you can eat.

Most fad diets have a few other things in common as well.

They don't really help people lose much weight, most people are not willing, or able, to stay on them for long periods of time, they do not result in permanent weight loss, they contribute little to health except for whatever weight may be lost, and people may actually GAIN weight once they go off the diet... which they will. Because of the nutritional restrictions found in most fad diets they are actually often UN-healthy.

Doesn't sound very 'liveable' to me. How about you?

Why would you even GO ON a fad diet in the first place?

What if you could find an eating plan, i.e. diet, which allowed you to eat foods you like, in quantities which are satisfying, and which actually cause, or contribute to, healthy, permanent, weight loss? What if that eating plan actually made you healthier as a result of following it, you could make it work almost anywhere, including at restaurants and Thanksgiving dinner? Okay, you can cheat a little at Thanksgiving dinner.

I think an eating plan like that could easily be called a liveable diet; how 'bout you?

"But", you ask, "Where can I find such a thing?"

Well, while there are many variations which may fill the bill, a recent study in Israel identified one, the Mediterranean diet, as the best liveable diet.

The Mediterranean diet has been recognized for quite some time as a healthy eating plan. This study by the Negev Nuclear Research Center in Dimona, Israel, not only reaffirms this, but also has tested it against other healthy eating plans as well. The results indicated that not only did eating in such a manner help result in healthy weight loss, but, after the study was over, participants continued to eat in much the same manner and experience much the same results.

Sounds like a liveable diet to me.

I don't normally like to promote many things with the word 'diet' in their name or description. However, the Mediterranean 'diet' is actually a style of eating. It includes a wide range of delicious and nutritious foods and is rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats such as olive oil. It even allows for the enjoyment of moderate amounts of alcohol. After all, can you see a bunch of Sicilians having a meal without a glass of Vino? Also, while low in sweets, meats, and saturated fats like butter, it does not deny them, merely makes moderate use of them.

If someone came to me and wanted to know a good 'diet' for health, fitness, and/or weight loss, I would definitely recommend a Mediterranean style diet. It does not matter who is asking as eating in this manner can be modified in so many ways that it would be hard for someone to NOT find something to like about it.
