Are You Unknowingly On A High-Carb Diet?

Of all of the different theories on dieting to hit the internet, one that is starting to pick up steam is the 'Paleo Diet.' This basis of this plan is to eat groups of foods much like our Paleolithic ancestors ate in order to survive and evolve. This plan for eating is also known as the 'hunter-gatherer diet' with the idea that these prehistoric humans would eat anything that they could hunt or find in regions in which they resided.


Moving ahead to modern-day living, one of the biggest misconceptions about this 'Paleo Diet', this hunter-gatherer style of eating, is that it is a 'low-carb' diet.

That is completely and utterly incorrect.

Even after reviewing the concept of the 'Paleo Diet' it is pretty clear how this pattern of eating could be construed as a 'low-carb' diet.

The plan itself preaches the abscense of refined sugars and legumes, eating lean meats, veggies, nuts, and fruits. What people fail to see is that both fruits and vegetables are carbohydrates and fruits even have the same carbohydrate load as would a refined carbohydrate yet it is still permitted as a part of this plan for eating to lose weight.

Hopefully you are starting to see the error in judgement that you have made.

The 'Paleo-Diet' could very well be a high-carbohydrate diet if you select from either of these two groups of foods; fruits and vegetables. Granted it would take four times or more the amount of vegetables to equal the carbohydrate content of fruit, but it is a carbohydrate none-the-less.

Now, since that has been cleared up, how is your diet looking? Are you unknowingly eating a 'high-carb' diet?

Even with that mystery debunked, the question still remains, how many carbohydrates is too many? You could ask anyone on the street and they would all give you a much different answer, and as well they should as the carb-load for a marathon runner is going to be dramatically different than a carb-load for a baseball player.

The one advantage to sticking to more of a 'Paleo' style of eating is that typically you will be eating the proper amount of carbohydrates without having to think about it too hard.

How many pieces can one person eat at a single sitting without getting a stomach ache? The difference between eating fruits and veggies for carbohydrates instead of refined sugars is that we as humans have been evolving on these foods since the beginning of time.

So the next time someone asks you about the 'Paleo Diet' and it being 'low-carb' you can respond, "it is not a low-carb diet, it is the proper amount."
