Know The Symptoms Related To Coliform Bacteria In Water

By Marguerite Stanton

If you have not heard of coliform bacteria in water, you may be more aware of the other enterobacteria members of its family. Salmonella, shigella and E. Coli all have a very close relationship to coliform and most of the symptoms found are very similar. No matter what bacterial infection you have from this particular family, all will eventually cause people with gastrointestinal problems.

The most common symptom of coliform is diarrhea. In some cases people will often notice blood in their stools which means that an individual is most likely suffering from dysentery. Other symptoms that will confirm this include abdominal pains and a fever. An individual may also notice that she/he has become very intolerant to lactose. A condition that may not disappear once the bacteria has been removed from the body. In very caustic scenarios a person may begin to vomit blood, go into shock or become delusional.

If diarrhea is a symptom that occurs without bleeding, then a person is possibly dealing with an E. Coli infection. This infection clears on its own in a few days. If the symptoms become worse after three days then it is possible that an individual has a more lethal form of E. Coli in their body. The more dangerous strains can usually cause hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Flu like symptoms can appear but are really just symptoms of typhoid fever. A loss of appetite, abdominal tenderness and recurring headaches are some signs of this fever. A true indicator may also appear as a red rash on the chest area. If this is the case, an individual must be treated immediately since typhoid fever is known to be fatal.

Coliform bacterial infections are a major cause of urinary tract infection in women. Women that are either pregnant or have extremely low immunity will find themselves susceptible to this infection. Often time the infection is not cause by drinking contaminated water or eating contaminated foods. A more direct contact on the skin or near the vaginal area will create a urinary tract infections. It is possible that a woman's healthy bacteria balance may be off due to any coliform infection.

When individuals begin to develop a blood infection, it is possible that they are suffering from yersinia. This organism is much more dangerous than other types of bacteria because they are not affected by very cold temperatures, which means they can survive refrigeration. If the disease moves beyond the intestinal system they will then begin to infect the blood and travel to other organs. Immediate action must be taken when this bacterial infection is suspected to be within a person.

Coliform is usually known to be contained in animal products and bi-products. As of recently, the outbreaks have been centered around fresh produce. The last outbreaks, as you may know were centered around lettuce and spinach. This goes to show that bacterial contamination does not only exist in undercooked animal meat.

To protect yourself and your family members, always wash your foods, both produce and animal products if possible. You may even want to go a little beyond that by cleansing your foods in very diluted chlorinated water to stay clear of coliform bacteria in water that your foods may carry. Also as an important note, always wash your hands before dealing with any type of food.
