Thousands of people begin the New Year with the same resolution they had the previous years: weight loss! But many of them will probably fail because they don't know where to begin. Of course the internet is a source of a million choices: meal plans, herbal medicines, diet tea, superfoods, and ancient secrets.
But the most important resource for a diet jumpstart is you. You know your body very well. You know your eating habits. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You know the capacity of your willpower to sustain a meal plan.
But before you talk of how to jumpstart a diet, there are few things that you should know:
a. Weight loss is not just about a diet. It includes other important areas of your body - right exercise, proper rest and sleep, the appropriate recreation and all that.
b. Dieting is not a one-time decision. It is a decision you have to make every day. When you wake up in the morning, you face the mirror and tell yourself: I will stick to my diet.
c. A good meal plan is both including and excluding: you include the right foods that give you the nutrients your body needs; and excludes food that adds to your weight. Any nutritionist or dietician will tell you that dieting is not always about excluding, but including certain food groups that nourish you, keep you from feeling hungry, and prevent weight gain.
Now, having said that, you might one to begin with something that is universally accepted as the best and most natural way to jumpstart a diet: fruits!
Studies have shown that the human body can burn up to 16% more calories if the meal has fruits or vegetables in it.
a. Fruits high in vitamin C are known to be effective because they liquefy or burn off body fat making it easier for the body to eliminate them. These include: apples, oranges, lemons, pineapples, and grapefruit.
b. Fruits also nourish the body as they contain essential vitamins, water, and fiber. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages fruits against the rising epidemic of obesity because fruits are low in calories and energy density. You can also try tropical fruits like mango, kiwi and banana for variety. Banana, known to be a fruit for athlete because it is a high-energy food without adding weight to the body.
c. Fruits contain fluids. These are mostly made of water which makes you feel full but easy to eliminate.
d. Fruits are easy to prepare. You can eat them raw, or you can eat them as smoothies or fruit shakes.
e. Fruits are easy to find. Unlike meal plans that you have to order or you have to buy in specific outlets, fruits are available the whole year round in your neighborhood grocer.
Fortunately, the internet is also a good source of various ways to prepare food. Just remember that this is a jumpstart diet - it is up to your willpower to sustain it.
