Basics Concerning Natural Black Hair Care

By Dorothea Garner

Natural hair of African Americans or Blacks is different from that of most other races. The strands grow in what is considered a small helix shape. Natural black hair care is often used to refer to the various methods of maintenance for this texture that do not require the use of harmful products.

The shape the strands grow in is what creates this unique texture. These types of locks feel and look denser than straight types. Over many years, people with afro-textured hair have used flat irons, chemicals, hot combs, blow dryers and other supplies and products to straighten their locks. These techniques, although effective at changing the texture, are known to cause damage and stunt growth.

Beauty supply companies, salons and online websites are just some of places people can find tips, techniques and products related to natural styling and care. Specific styles are associated with this type of care and maintenance because they protect the locks and do not involve use of damaging products. Braids, afros and hi-top fades are just a few examples of these protective styles.

An easy, and effective, thing to do when caring for these locks is to keep them moisturized. Usually this is done by adding water, which is the moisture, and then sealing it in with other products. While water and oil are not believed to mix well, many use natural oils to seal in this moisture. People have their own preferences when it comes to techniques and products. The best way to find out what is ideal for you is through trial and error.

Be sure to take care of the ends of strands. This is what helps guarantee growth. The ends needs to stay trimmed and moisturized to prevent the occurrence of split ends and allow for growth. Eliminating or limiting the amount of chemicals and heat that are used is crucial to maintaining healthy locks. These are things that may lead to balding, drying and other problems.

Many people with these locks choose not to wash them too often. This is done to keep all the natural oils intact. When the locks are overwashed, the strands and scalp may become too dry. Furthermore, when the locks are cleaned these conditioner may be used over traditional shampoo. Another option is making homemade products using all-natural ingredients.

These locks are known for being coarse, curly and in some cases, dry. For this reason, it is best that those with long hair avoid the use of accessories, such as ties and pins, or brushes and combs, that pull strands out. People may wear a satin or silk scarf or use a pillowcase made from these materials to keep their locks from being pulled out at night while they sleep. This tradition dates back many years.

The internal body is just as important as the exterior when it comes to looking and feeling your best. People should eat healthy and consume the recommended daily intake of water. Diet will reflect in the physical appearance of a person. Good nutrition will help the hair grow, and remain strong and healthy. Natural black hair care requires a lot of effort and time, but the benefits are plenty.
