I used to dread the time of year from Fall through Winter. I used to get colds, aches, pains, and sometimes the worst thing of all - bronchitis. How miserable is that?

I'd have to:

Stay in bed
Feel awful with no energy
Not do anything except get up to pee and maybe drink some water if I could find the strength

We all see it happen every year. And you never know if you'll be the victim of the suffering that comes from the flu.

Many people take precautions. They wash their hands many times a day. They stay away from people who are sick. They try to stay out of crowded places so they won't catch something. Does this sound like you?

Spiritual seekers say that if you believe in a flu season, you will get the flu, because what you believe is what you attract in your life. Well, I believe this now, too. So I try not to think about getting sick during the winter months. (Except now when I'm giving you my secrets for staying healthy.)

I started doing something different, but not just at this time of year. I do it all the time. I add antioxidants and alkaline foods to my diet.

"What are antioxidants? you might ask. "And what kinds of foods do you eat? Antioxidants are powerful defenders against disease. Dietary antioxidants are vitamins A, C, E, and K, and other things with funny names like glutathione, lipoic acid, coenzyme Q-10, and selenium. They can really boost your immune system to fight viruses. You can get all of these disease fighters by eating a variety and an abundance of vegetables, leafy greens, and low-sugar fruits. You can also find these antioxidants in a good quality supplement. But remember, supplements only supplement a good diet.

So now for the diet.

Ever heard of alkaline foods? These are foods that keep your body alkaline rather than acidic, so the bugs in our environment don't have a chance to grow in your body and make you sick.

What are they? Nothing more than vegetables, leafy greens, and low-sugar fruits - the same foods that provide antioxidants. Certain grains, nuts, and seeds such as quinoa, amaranth, spelt, almonds, pine nuts, and flax, chia, and hemp seeds also help keep your system alkaline. When you add more of these foods to your diet, you get to kill the bugs and enjoy the added benefits of a healthier, more alkaline system. Bugs don't like living in an alkaline environment in your body. How great is that?

Eat lots of veggies, greens, and low-sugar fruits.
Drink lots of alkaline water.

Is It Healthier To Be Wheat Free?

Is wheat in your diet the deadly sin many would have you believe? Is it best to cut it out completely for a healthier lifestyle? To consider your options, first let's clarify the difference between wheat free and gluten free diets to dispel any confusion. Wheat is found in foods prepared with flour such as cakes, bread, pizza base, pasta, cookies, in sauces thickened with white flour, in soy sauce and of course in wheat berries. Gluten is the protein found in many grains such as wheat, barley, oat, rye and semolina.

Sufferers of the autoimmune disorder celiac disease have to exclude all gluten from their diet as the ingestion of even small amounts of gluten (and therefore wheat) leads to severe stomach pain, bloating, poor absorption of food and vitamins with resultant weight loss, fatigue, gas and diarrhea. If you really want to lose weight, replace your wheat-laden bread and pizza with completely wheat free high carb foods such as fruit, vegetables, rice, plain meat and fish. The pounds will drop off you. But if you replace wheat based pizza with a wheat or gluten free version, the pounds will probably continue to stick to your hips.

Improving Overall Health

Many healthy devotees of a wheat free diet firmly believe it improves their overall wellbeing. Their rationale is based on avoiding the onset of wheat allergy symptoms. Followers believe a wheat free diet will:

Ease digestion. This rationale is based on the fact that the gluten contained in wheat is sticky and hard to digest, so stays in the gut for a long time, promoting bacterial growth and stomach problems.

Reduce joint pain. This rationale is that bone and joint pain is seen in some celiac disease patients due to their gluten allergy.

Improve brain function. This rationale is based on studies which have linked celiac disease with epilepsy and associated seizures, and the fact that people with autism are advised to avoid wheat in their diet.

Recommendations for Healthy Living

The jury is still out on whether a wheat free diet really is the best one to follow if you are not wheat sensitive. Many people swear they feel better on a wheat free diet, but how much of this is placebo effect and how much is due to just taking in less refined carbohydrates and sugar? That would make anyone feel better. Many nutritionists believe that reducing processed wheat in the diet and replacing it with whole grains is far more beneficial: whole grains can reduce the onset of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and even some types of cancer.

With public opinion so divided on the benefits of following a wheat free diet in the absence of any allergies, feel free to experiment for yourself. But if you do, try it for no less than a period of 3 weeks to see if there is a difference, and base your meals on fresh meat and fish, plenty of fruits and vegetables, lots of whole grain rice and only use the wheat free breads, pastas and pastries in moderation when you absolutely have to have it. It is also highly recommended that you ask your doctor for a wheat allergy test if you're serious about finding out if wheat is affecting your body and go from there.

My Gluten Story

I've Decided! It's Time!

We're doing the Gluten-Free, Sugar Cleanse.

I grew up on the typical children's American diet of Mac & cheese, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup and whatever latest Kellogg's healthy cereal was being promoted at the time (Cheerios, Corn Flakes or Rice Puffs). My sister and I always had a good breakfast of one Graham Cracker with a spoonful of cream cheese and a dab of jelly on top. Off to school we went, not thinking anything of it. All seemed fine until...

The night the crisis hit. At age 11, I was struck down by an uncontrollable urge to eat and not stop until I was so stuffed I was rolling around on the floor unable to move. Why this night was different than the Friday night's before it? I'll never know. But this I do know, I would never be the same with food again.

An eating disorder of magnitude took over my life. For 20 years I binged uncontrollably, starved myself, binged and purged, dieted and finally gave up. The foods that were most targeted for these gouging episodes were items such as doughnuts, loaves of bread, and packages of cheese, ice cream, and sandwiches.

Notice the tendency to go for dairy, gluten and sugary products.

It wasn't until I found myself in Overeaters Anonymous (twenty years after that first fateful night) and clean of sugar, wheat and dairy that I began to feel safe again and good in my body.

In the meantime, 20 years had been lost from a life that could have been well-lived.

After a year of clean eating I was inner guided to leave OA. I wanted to become a "normal" eater which meant no more weighing, measuring and food planning. I wanted to be free to eat whatever I wanted whenever I wanted to eat. That intention set me on a course of healing that resulted in success. I took my trigger foods back, discovered I could eat them in moderation and still feel great and in control.

I accomplished what I set out to do and have had over 30 years of sanity with food. I eat what I want, when I want, and never ever experience cravings, feel out of control or engage in obsessive thinking or compulsive behaviors. I created the Body Way program to teach other women the skills to accomplish what I did and discovered that what I taught had a profound impact on others as well as myself.

BUT THERE IS MORE.

As I grew older, my body began to change. I noticed that I wasn't able to exercise as much as I used to and I also noticed that every few days, if I hadn't exercised enough to work up a good sweat, my body would feel toxic. I began to wonder if this was normal. (Just for the record, this wasn't about body image; it was about the feeling of discomfort and toxicity I felt in my body that didn't seem right.)

As I grew older still, I noticed that my tolerance for certain foods began to decrease. After menopause, I began to experience arthritic inflammatory hip pain and stiffness. I made a special trip to John of God seeking help for the hip pain and got it! (More at my John of God Blog). When I came home I felt great for a couple of months. Then the inflammation slowly started to return. I noticed a correlation between increased dairy and inflammation. I eliminated dairy and immediately felt better again. The final shock occurred when I experimented with bagels 3 mornings in a row. After the 3rd day of bagel breakfasts my body went into severe cramping. Although my nutritionist warned me to stay off gluten, even in small amounts, I had to find out myself.

As I get older, stronger and healthier, I'm excited to explore what else is possible. What might the hidden quantities of sugar I consume be doing to my body? How great can I really allow myself to feel?

It has been reported that taking too much vitamin D can be toxic. However, this is at levels of 50,000 IU per day when taken for several months. The recommended amount of vitamin D3 is 5,000 IU per day 10% of harmful levels and well within safety.

Turmeric

Often in the form of turmeric rhizome extract, turmeric supplements boost mental acuity, improve memory, increase alertness, and provide antioxidant support.

Turmeric's primary drawback is its inability to be readily absorbed through the digestive system on its own. Therefore, you will want to use a nutritional supplement that utilizes black pepper extract, which has been shown to increase intestinal absorption rates of turmeric into the bloodstream by 2,000%.

3 Frozen Foods That Are Fine For You And How To Eat Them

A large factor in whether or not my clients and readers are able to stay on task in getting in better shape, deals specifically with having the time to keep up with eating better.

If you think about it, society is constantly pushing back against you wanting to eat better foods. The least nutritious food choices among the whole are the ones which are more prevalent, faster, and often less expensive. If you add in our hurried lives, this makes the goal of fitness more difficult. Faster is always going to be an imperative in our modern existence. Eating right is often slower in shopping and preparation time invested than what you put in eating poorly with fast food.

The obvious first step is one I have advocated to clients in person and in my writings: when you make something healthy, make enough for later on. However, the problem is you might get sick of what you made and want a totally new meal. We're only human right? Also, eating really healthy can be really pricey. The debate rages on with that one. You have some people who eat healthy regularly claim it is cheaper. This has not been my experience. I also believe the lower cost of more processed and less healthy foods is a big draw.

So let's see if we can get the benefits of lower price and good health in an unlikely area: the frozen food aisle.

Three Items In The Frozen Food Section Of The Super Market That Will Help You Lose Weight And Keep It Off

1. Dial yourself up the frozen fruit and vegetables without worry. To me they taste just as good. I'll venture you probably haven't tried them and might have it in your head they taste lousy. Try them and then decide. You have variety, good taste, good health, value, and no more worry about them spoiling. I like to throw carrots or broccoli in the steamer for 20 to 25 minutes for a yummy and healthy side dish.

2. Have some premium high-end ice cream on hand. You want the ones with the least ingredients. I am talking about sugar, real cream, and natural flavors. Here is a primer on healthy ice creams, but remember it's ice cream. It is always going to be in the 20% rather than the 80% of allowed foods. My rule is buy quality and this means fewer ingredients. You aren't going to through a carton in a week anyways. It's a treat so treat yourself well.

3. You can load up on the steaks. Fresh frozen t-bones, new york strips, and sirloins are now common in your frozen food section. They are tasty and easy to prepare. The ones I buy you simply bake them for about 15 or 20 minutes. The key here is savings. You can get 6 or 8 strips for $10 to $15. You can make 3 or 4 good meals for two people out of that. Good luck beating that in the fresh meats aisle. Also don't forget to check the internet. There are some very popular online brands.

The Amazing Benefits of Garlic

This has to be my battle cry when it comes to all things disease. Anyone who spends any time with me will hear me say again and again and again: "Are you taking garlic?" "Try garlic, it's a wonderful antibiotic." "Garlic should be able to nip that cold in the bud."

Sorry friends, family, loved ones. But garlic is my go-to food when my health starts going south. And my passion rubs off on anyone around me with even the slightest hint of the need for my help.

I use garlic for absolutely everything I can think of. I tend to forget a lot of the natural remedies that I have discovered along the way, but not garlic.

It's easy, available and EFFECTIVE!

Take your garlic fresh if you can. And raw is best. It's most potent this way. If you cook your garlic (and I do), it doesn't have the same effect for medicinal purposes. (But it does taste yummy.)

Earache

Garlic Oil: Crush a fresh clove in a tablespoon of warm oil. Let sit 5 minutes. Strain. Use two drops per ear, three times daily.

Respiratory Issues

Garlic Press: Crush a fresh clove inside a folded paper towel. Pour hot water over it and wring out. Apply to chest for 90 seconds.

Garlic in Honey: Mince half a clove, coat with honey in a teaspoon. Take orally twice daily.

Head Cold

Garlic Press: Crush a fresh clove inside a folded paper towel. Pour hot water over it and wring out. Apply to the soles of feet

Sore Throat

Garlic Press: Crush a fresh clove inside a folded paper towel. Pour hot water over it and wring out. Apply to neck and feet.

Garlic Water Gargle: Pour hot water over crushed garlic, strain, and gargle.

Topical Infection

Garlic Press: Place a tablespoon of minced garlic in paper towel. Pour hot water over it. Steep for 30 seconds. Apply to infected area for two minutes.

Prevention is the best cure. Get on it early and you won't get sick. At the first sign of illness immediately administer a dose of garlic and honey. Continue for a minimum of two days.

Now, about that cold.

You should take some garlic... it's a wonderful antibiotic (smile).

Important Health Resource: Why Pocessed Foods Are Bad

Processed Foods are virtually in any food you come across at your grocery store that's not in its raw and natural state. Any food that is pasteurized, dehydrated, frozen, canned or even cooked can be considered 'processed food'. So is it really good for us to be eating a good amount of our food like this? Let's examine a few of the facts about why processed foods are bad.

The main reason food manufactures process a large amount of the food we eat is to keep it free of dangerous bacteria so it can last longer. Sounds like a good thing, but considering almost all our food is processed, it becomes not good for our health. For survival, years ago people salted meats and canned preserves. However, today we still put jelly on toast and make sandwiches with processed for our kids when we have refrigerators that will keep our food fresh. Why you ask? The companies that process these foods care more about making a quick buck than their consumer's health, and so the processed foods you consume today are not nearly the same top quality food that our grandparents ate.

Here are just some of the reasons why processed foods are bad for your health:

In order to save money and increase production, businesses typically only use the most affordable and typically least wholesome a part of the natural product that is being processed. By way of example, apple juice concentrate consists of none of the fiber or antioxidants of the whole fruit. You're getting virtually pure fructose. And you have no thought what conditions the foods were grown in, how old they were just before being processed, or any other info you may typically desire to know about before you place something inside your mouth.

Processed foods tend to include much more sugar than fresh food. Consuming processed foods can bring about diabetes and obesity, amongst other issues. In addition to sugar content going up, vitamin and minerals go down. Process foods are designed to make fruits and vegetables stay fresh longer, but it can't prevent the loss of nutrients. The moment the inner flesh of a fruit or vegetable comes in contact with air, it starts losing valuable nutrients. Processing accelerates this loss, meaning your canned apples might have little, or even none of the nutrients which you would get from eating a fresh apple.

The packaging used in process foods and the toxins it creates is another reason why processed foods are bad for you. BPA, a frequent chemical employed in producing plastic, can get into processed foods from packaging. This dreadful little guy has been linked to cancer, fertility problems, decreased immune system function, and much more.

All of us know it is less complicated to grab a package of instant oatmeal and add water then taking the time to allow oats to cook. But, just think for a minute; is it worth the cost to your health? Maybe your health is more important than the time you will save grabbing a fruit cup in place of a fresh and juicy orange. And let's be truthful; is not the enjoyment we feel from consuming a home-cooked meal or fresh food worth the additional time we put into it? We devote such a considerable amount of time attempting to save time. We do not spend nearly enough time enjoying the blessings in life. It's time we began taking pride in the food we place into our bodies, as opposed to just shoving whatever's quick and easy into our mouths just to quiet our bellies. Food For Health

For years, I've been trying to convince people I love and care about and a few who were just acquaintances, that food can heal. So far no one has quite believed me. I wouldn't say that I've given up on spreading that truth, I've just decided to go about it a different way.

Our health care system is broken. Our food system is broken. Our society has moved so far away from real food and real health and toward convenience packaged as "convenience foods" and medicines, that it's no wonder most people including doctors and other highly skilled professionals are so out of touch with the healing power of real food.

Rather than try to convince you that food can heal your ills, I'm going to suggest that it's worth just seeing if it can make you feel better. Whether or not you believe food is going to actually cure you, the right foods aren't going to hurt you. Maybe you're experiencing emotional or physical stress. Maybe you're battling a serious illness such as cancer or auto-immune dysfunction. What do you have to lose in changing your diet? What if it just makes you feel better as you deal with your particular challenges? Most medicines today come with a long list of side-effects and warnings. Many cancer medications are still experimental. Medicines get stacked on to combat the side-effects of other medicines. By making simple changes in your eating habits, you can ease the effects of the medications you choose to take.

I personally know four people who have cured their advanced cancer or the advanced cancer of a loved one through nutrition and supplements alone - no surgery, no chemo. I personally know twice as many who have died of cancer or complications from cancer after using conventional treatments - surgery, chemo, radiation, etc. That's a small sampling of people, but enough to convince me personally that it's worth looking into more deeply.

Here are my basic recommendations to help you feel better when facing the smallest to the biggest challenges in life, emotional and physical:

1. Hydrate - Drink one quart of pure water for every 50 pounds of body weight. If you weigh 150 pounds, drink 3 quarts of water a day. If you are a coffee or tea drinker, add a cup to a cup and a half of water to that total for each cup of coffee or tea that you drink.

2. Eat lots of greens - Greens like kale and spinach are considered super foods because of the many vitamins, phytonutrients and antioxidants they contain. At each meal, make sure your plate is at least 50 percent vegetables and most of those vegetables leafy greens (broccoli, kale, spinach, Swiss Chard, Brussels sprouts) - not iceberg lettuce!

3. Cut out flour and sugar. These two are sure to slow you down. Cutting out flour and sugar means cutting out most, if not all, processed and packaged foods. There are so many other delicious foods to eat! Replace that bread with an extra helping of vegetables. Instead of cereal or toast for breakfast, try a smoothie with plain yogurt, fresh or fruits and some greens. Add more greens as you get used to the taste. You can also cut out the yogurt and just blend fruit and greens. If you must eat bread, go for sprouted grain, flourless breads like the ones you can get from Food For Life.

When craving sugary sweetness, discover the natural sweetness of fruits and vegetables. The cravings will go away! Just give yourself a week or two. And please don't switch to sugar substitutes! They are just as harmful to you, and some more harmful, than sugar. If you must, use a little raw honey or maple syrup.

4. Eat fermented vegetables - This is an acquired taste for some. When we first started eating real fermented sauerkraut eight years ago, my husband couldn't stand the smell of it. I'd open the jar, scoop out everyone's servings and close the jar as fast as I could. It took a little time, but we all love it now and don't mind the smell at all. In fact, different blends of vegetables with a little garlic smell great! If you learn how to ferment vegetables yourself, this is a very cost effective way to get your organic vegetables in. Fermented vegetables are packed with vitamins, fiber and enzymes that help with digestion. They are also loaded with beneficial bacteria to help keep your gut flora in check.

5. Eat certified organic vegetables and fruits and grass-fed meats as much as possible. Do whatever you can to reduce the amount of pesticide residue you ingest. Also, unless you're eating organic, you can't be sure that you're not eating genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The point here is to reduce your body's intake of chemicals, growth hormones, antibiotics, and other potentially harmful substances. You want to keep your system as clean as possible.

6. Consume raw, organic dairy. Milk, cheese, butter. Full fat and raw. Milk is a live food. It's important to get to know the dairy farmer you buy from and get to know the laws surrounding raw dairy in your state. I grew up on regular, store bought milk. Now, I only drink milk raw. It tastes better, feels better in my tummy and doesn't leave the scummy feeling in my mouth. If you don't like the idea of consuming raw milk, I recommend cutting milk out of your diet or consuming just organic, plain yogurt. That is at least free of added sugar and full of probiotics.

For some of you, this may be overwhelming... too many big changes. As I always recommend, make just one change at a time if it's too much for you at once. Others will find it easier to just make all the changes whole hog. There are always ways to improve your diet. There are always healthier alternatives. Don't expect your doctor to know about healthy food choices. This is an area where you have do some of your own research and cut through the misinformation to get to the truth.

I hope that some of you will give this a try. Give yourself a month and see how you feel. Try one change and add another a week or month at a time. Maybe do it just for you and add in your other family members as you start to feel great! Find a way to get to better health.

Partying - The Health Effects

Christmas, New Year and countless birthdays throughout the year could mean two things. One, you have been enjoying partying in various locations and two, you are wondering where your extra weight has come from. Needless to say, there is a strong link to gaining weight from alcohol consumption.

You may feel that your dancing efforts, or travelling to and from the party may be enough to shed the consumed calories, but it's unlikely. The NHS highlight that, one glass of wine can contribute the same number of calories as a slice of cake. They add that the average British person will obtain approximately 2,000 calories per month solely from alcohol intake. This equates to 24,000 calories per year which is the same as around 120 donuts.

Shockingly Tokushima University researched the effects of beer on muscles and found unusual results. They found that beer can actually prevent the deterioration of muscle tissue. You may think this then allows you to drink as much as you like, however the study also shows the amount you would need for beer to utilise its muscle benefits would be enough to kill you many times over. The negatives on your weight and health of drinking beer is far stronger and therefore the only advise to prevent gaining too much weight during your parties would be to not drink at all.

Furthermore, drinking paired with snacking, heavy meals and next day binge eating, the amount of weight you can gain simply from going on a night out could be more than you first thought. Instead of trying to recover your hangover with unhealthy foods, why not try drinking plenty of water, fresh juices and eating better. Some may even find that a next day gym session or swim (although not advised if alcohol is still in your system) can help freshen your day and feel better. Whether you choose to exercise the day after or to have a gap of relaxing recovery before you carry on your workout routine, eating the right foods and taking good quality supplements can change how your body reacts to the exercise.

Fitness blog 'Mens Fitness' noted how the University of Birmingham found certain supplements including branched chain amino acids can considerably lead to a reduction in muscle soreness and fatigue. Additionally they have highlighted other supplements such as creatine, protein bars and powders, conjugated linoleic acid, glutamine and multivitamins all play their part in helping you exercise better, recover faster and keep your work out more efficient.

However warning must be given that primarily supplements should only be used as advised and to only purchase them from reputed sources. Recent popularity for supplements has caused rises in untrustworthy bogus companies selling steroid spikes supplements that are extremely dangerous to your health. Men's Health magazine note how some companies selling these steroid spiked pills achieved revenue of over $4 million before their products were discontinued. This highlights the strong demand for health improving assistance, but cautious must always be taken when looking for what's best to buy.

On the other hand not all supplement vendors are out to con you. There are many firms out there with a sole goal to provide legitimate supplements to help you lose that party weight. Overall alcohol consumption will always lead to gained calories, but how you deal with the related activities.

Seven Reasons Why Humans Should Not Eat Meat

Who said we should eat the flesh of another sentient being? How come the cow eats grass to grow strong and we are told to eat the cow to become strong as an ox? Personally I was never able to break down animal flesh, and much of my life I questioned the need to eat it, despite having family in the 'meat industry'. I have to say now that it just doesn't add up, but we know it does if there is a buck to be made.

Massive feed lots in the US, Australia and South America along with cattle farms carved out of Amazonian forests remain an anathema to me. There are 20-billion head of livestock on earth, more than triple the number of people. According to the Worldwatch Institute, the global livestock population has increased 60 percent since 1961, and the number of fowl being raised for food has nearly quadrupled in the same time period, from 4.2-billion to 15.7-billion.

The book, Food for the Spirit, Vegetarianism in the World Religions, summarizes this point of view as follows. 'Many thinking nutritionists, biologists and physiologists now offer convincing evidence that humans are in fact not meant to eat flesh'.

Here are seven facts in support of this view:

'Physiologically, people are more akin to plant eaters, foragers and grazers, such as monkeys, elephants and cows, than to carnivora such as dogs, tigers and leopards'.'For example, carnivora do not sweat through their skin; body heat is controlled by rapid breathing and extrusion of the tongue. Vegetarian animals, on the other hand, have sweat pores for heat control and the elimination of impurities'.'Carnivora have long teeth and claws for holding and killing prey; vegetarian animals have short teeth and no claws'.'The saliva of carnivora contains no ptyalin and cannot predigest starches; that of vegetarian animals contains ptyalin for the predigestion of starches'.'Flesh-eating animals secrete large quantities of hydrochloric acid to help dissolve bones; vegetarian animals secrete little hydrochloric acid'.'The jaws of carnivora only open in an up and down motion; those of vegetarian animals also move sideways for additional kinds of chewing'.'Carnivora must lap liquids (like a cat); vegetarian animals take liquids in by suction through the teeth'.

'There are many such comparisons, and in each case humans fit the vegetarian physiognomy. From a strictly physiological perspective, then, there are strong arguments that humans are not suited to a fleshy diet'.

I am always moved when I read something Gandhi said when he walked the Earth. 'The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be measured by the way in which its animals are treated' But more poignantly this might now read 'The greatness of the community of earth and its moral progress can be measured by the way in which its animals and fellow human beings are treated' I am sure he would not disagree with my rearrangement.

Vegetarians do not die hideous deaths, most pass away quietly with grace.Their carbon footprint is minimal and the space they take up is minimal.

Distilled Water - Distilling The Truth With a $10,000 Offer

It is time to separate the myths, misconceptions and outright fabricated lies about distilled water and its relationship to health and to the physiology of the human body. Distilled water is simply the most consistently pure water available anywhere and is the only regulated water on the market.

Distilled water was the first water to be sold in supermarkets prior to the first bottled water vending machine, which was installed in Bill's IGA Grocery store in Brooklyn, Michigan in 1976. In the late 50's, 60's and 70's only distilled water was sold in stores and could be found in the household cleaning products and laundry detergent aisles -- since it was used primarily for steam irons and car batteries. Why? Because all other water except rain water and distilled contains other substances, including inorganic minerals that would build up and plug the holes of the steam iron and collect on the lead plates of the battery, shortening the battery's life.

Michigan was one of the first states to experience and recognize the serious consequences of ground water pollution as a result of the random disposal of the automobile industry's hazardous waste materials in urban rivers streams and vacant land along country roads. At the same time the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was discovering the nationwide pollution of water tables from the indiscriminate dumping of toxic waste, along with chemicals from farming, nitrates, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides in addition to leaching from landfills.

Clean Water?

Now, three decades later, the chemicals remain in the water along with additional ones being introduced to our environment at a rate of approximately 1000 new chemicals and toxins per year. Despite that fact, municipal water supplies are only required to test for the 127 priority pollutants list in the 1972 Clean Water Act. They stopped testing and adding new chemicals to the list over 30 years ago due to the astronomical number of new chemicals produced annually. It is virtually impossible to remove them from the water. Water companies do not have the funds or ability to deal with this increasing dilemma.

For this reason alone, the bottled water industry has sprung up and grown exponentially over the years. Forbes Magazine reported that "... the bottled water industry is now growing faster than the economy."

In a race to grab a slice of the water profit pie, there are hundreds of water related companies who manufacture equipment, devices and methods of cleaning up and/or enhancing water. We are told that our city water is "perfectly safe and healthy to drink," even though, as in the case of San Diego's municipal water, it contains 24 of the 127 priority pollutants that are known to cause cancer in humans. It also contains trihalomethanes (THM) at twice the legal limit (6 carcinogens + chlorine), in addition to hydrofluorosilisic acid, used in rat poison and pesticides. The municipal water providers say all these carcinogens are at "safe levels" and meet EPA standards. Yeah, right. Give me a glass of water with well over two dozen carcinogens (that they actually test for), but just make sure they are all at "safe" levels and I'll feel safe and healthy.

So now we can buy spring water, glacier, mineral, sparkling, flavored, vitamin water, filtered, deionized, reverse osmosis, alkaline water, balanced water, vortex-ed water, zero water and far from last or least distilled water, just to name a very few!

If your goal is to get into the water business water and make the most money, I recommend running municipal water through a cheap carbon filter, bottle it and slap on a label that says "Spring Water"... that is, if you're unethical, like many water companies are. But guess what, it is not against the law to do that in most states. The only water that is regulated is distilled water; if you label it distilled, it must be purified by the distillation process.

If you buy your water from a vending machine, I highly recommend you check to see what the purification process consists of. If it is "filtration only," the water has only a portion of the chemicals removed and all of the inorganic minerals remain. The body cannot utilize inorganic minerals; only organic ionic minerals are healthy and can be utilized by the body. Inorganic minerals cannot be absorbed by cells and can contribute to plaque in the colon, kidney stones and several other ailments.

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis is the most common method of water purification which, when new, can eliminate more than 90 percent of carcinogens. However, the filters need to be replaced after treating a certain number of gallons of water. If they are not replaced, the quality of the filtered water begins to degrade rapidly to the point where the water coming out of the vending machine can be worse that the municipal water being filtered. When the filters have reached their capacity to hold chemicals, they start releasing the trapped materials with each vend as the water volume and pressure forces them loose.

The only water that can be trusted consistently is water that has been purified through the distillation process. This consists of boiling the water, killing all bacteria, cysts, amoeba and waterborne diseases, leaving all chemical and other pollutants in the boiling tank, collecting the steam and cooling it back to liquid distilled water. This water is then polished by a carbon filter to eliminate the possibility of volatile organic compounds that may have turned to a gaseous form and passed through with the steam. The result is pure, clean, healthy H2O plus nothing.

Distilled water is so pure that it is a natural solvent (hungry, empty of any other substance or compound). As a consequence, distilled water will easily dissolve inorganic mineral plaque buildup in the colon, kidneys (stones), gall bladder (stones) and other parts of the body and flush them out.

Our bodies consist of over 70% water which needs to be replaced daily from loss through perspiration, evaporation through breathing, elimination of waste through the colon and bladder. Water is needed to create blood, lymph, digestive juices, lubricants, bodily fluids, etc. Depending on the purity of the water we consume, our body needs to remove all of the carcinogens, toxins, chemicals, and worthless inorganic minerals (dirt) before it can be used. The cleaner the water is to begin with, the faster it can be used for hydration and other bodily functions. According to Andrew Weil, MD, ("America's Doctor" and one of Time Magazine's "Top 100 most influential people"), distilled water is not only the most consistently pure, clean healthy water -- it is the water he drinks regularly.

Alkaline Water

Dr. Weil also said that the latest fad of "alkaline water" is a scam. He calls it "bogus, save your money." He claims that the $2,000-$6000 machines sold worldwide produce alkaline water at 8+ pH. This does not in any way change the body or blood's pH, because the very moment that the alkaline water reaches the stomach, the stomach acid instantaneously neutralizes it before it ever leaves the stomach!

A well-known doctor on the internet claims that, "Early death comes from drinking distilled water." He and several other "professionals" that have quoted him have caused this myth to go viral on the internet. When you Google "Early death comes from drinking distilled water," there are close to one and a half million results. Most of these published false quotes come from individuals who are marketing water filters or alkaline water machines. In order to claim alkaline or filtered water is the best, they feel a need to malign or disparage the best, purest and healthiest water for drinking: distilled. Not only is it the best drinking water available, it is the cheapest in any supermarket in America.

Myths About Distilled Water

The most popular myth about distilled water is that all the important minerals that the body needs have been removed. First of all, most minerals found dissolved in water along with chemicals, carcinogens and toxins are inorganic in nature, not ionic or chelated* and able to be absorbed and used by our bodies. They instead cause plaque on the colon wall. A staggering statistic is that 33% or one out of three people over 55 will contract colon cancer! Dr. Charles Mayo, founder of the prestigious Mayo Clinic, not only recommends drinking distilled water, but says, "Water hardness is the underlying cause of many, if not all, of the diseases resulting from poisons in the intestinal tract."

Another false claim is that "distilled water leaches valuable minerals from the body." First of all distilled water does not leach minerals from the body. People who make that claim are more than likely some uninformed "professional" with little or no knowledge of the body's physiology. When you drink distilled water or any water, it is absorbed through the walls of the intestines (colon) and the body removes nothing from the water that is not beneficial. Then the water is used to make blood, lymph, digestive juices, lubricants, bodily fluids, etc. Distilled water is simply pure H2O + nothing. It does not course through our veins, blood does! Blood delivers nutrients to the body's cells and carries away waste materials. Blood is not going to deliver a protein, mineral or vitamin to a cell and then take it away. To put it simply, distilled water does not leach minerals from the body. For those of you who believe that, I suggest you take a summer adult high school education course on science and chemistry.

Since the establishment of Distillation Station in 1976, distilled water vending, no one has been able to prove that early death comes from drinking distilled water, or that distilled water leaches minerals from your body. To date, no one has claimed the $10,000 offer by submitting a blind study or published paper proving in any way that pure, clean distilled water can cause an early death or leach minerals from the body. The offer is still open.

The Truth

I personally have been drinking a gallon of distilled water per day for over 40 years. I fast all food for a minimum of 21 days annually. Over the years I have done three 40-day fasts on just distilled water. 6. Fructose is hard on your liver and is stored as fat when broken down - this means that over time it can cause insulin resistance and liver disease.

7. Sweet n' low is 200x sweeter than sugar and is filled with aspartame which is believed to cause a plethora of other health issues including depression and headaches.

8. Splenda, on the other hand, is mostly sucralose, which has chlorine added to it to enhance it, and, like most medications, comes with many side effects such as heart palpitations, joint pain and rashes. The slogan you hear on television is that it 'tastes like sugar because it is made from sugar", implies that it is similar and 'safe'. This is as misleading as saying that since oil is made of dinosaurs, oil must be edible. This is ridiculous and so is the statement made by the makers of Splenda (in my opinion). I would never buy this stuff.

A word about fructose. Is it bad? Yes, no question. The exception to this is the fructose found naturally in fruit. Food in its natural form, an orange for example, has a knack of packaging all the fiber and digestive enzymes to consume and break-down the orange. Fruit, in small quantities, despite the abundance of fructose, like stevia, is a "go".
